After a while I got up from the floor and went over to the window and parted the curtain and put my head beside his, and saw that my supposition had been correct — it was a bird he’d been looking at — though my presence seemed to startle the bird itself, and it flew from the branch of the hedge on which it had been perched, and removed itself to some distance across the road. At which point the cat, without waiting to see whether anything else interesting might happen, hopped down from the windowsill and walked a few paces across the carpet before stopping at a particular place, not far from the boxes and the TV, to begin grooming itself.
