Hope, as Saint Paul would’ve said, is the virtue that opposes the sin of despair. And not a baseless hope, but a hope that is more akin to confidence than it is to, say, wishfulness. And not confidence in one’s self so much as confidence in God. That is to say, in God’s plan, or in ‘providence’.
