Earlier this morning I walked Blue down the hill and into the wash, and he snuffled around, picking up various scents. We didn’t see any animals, though a couple of mornings ago we did see three or four coyotes. One of them stood very still, looking at me, from about fifty yards away, after we’d spotted each other. I don’t think Blue saw them until after I already had. The sun had just come up above the range of mountains to the east, and its light was stark and angular.
