At 9 a.m. I put on my jogging clothes and left the apartment and rode the elevator down to the lobby of the building, which was empty except for the guy at the desk, who I waved to but who didn’t wave back because he didn’t see me just then, as he happened to be looking at his phone, which I don’t offer as a criticism but only as an explanation or a description of the moment. When I returned he did see me, and we had a nice back-and-forth about how cold it was outside, though in truth it had not been as cold as I’d been expecting it to be, even if the weather was no longer mild enough, in my estimation, for a person to go without sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a hat.
