That configuring that one might feel is what I mean by consolation, and it isn’t unimportant to the spiritual life. A person who is new to the faith, or has returned to it after a long time away, can benefit from the experience of consolations, insofar as they sustain one’s faith during the critical period of formation, even if a more mature faith will persist when such consolations are taken away, or are no longer to be found.
