Which doesn’t sound like anything heroic, insofar as fraudulence and superficiality are celebrated by literally no one. But when those things are rooted in the modes by which a culture operates, they do not announce themselves for what they are, but infuse themselves into the so-called ‘ethos’ of the people, or anyway of the mainstream. And so they can be difficult to recognize, and detach oneself from. Because one’s very life becomes saturated in them.
