I suppose I should explain why I think this is true, even if it seems self-evident to me, but I don’t want to go on and on about it either, so perhaps I’ll say only this, as an addendum: in the salvific economy (if you can imagine such a thing) the only currency is charity. And charity does not increase in the person who cannot discipline his own will. It does not necessarily increase in the person who can discipline his own will, either, but it does increase in that person if he offers the suffering that he feels, because of the disciplining, as a loving sacrifice to God.
