Because when a people are demoralized — when they have dispatched from themselves the moral law by which God would bind themselves to him, and look upon that law as though it were antiquated nonsense, and nothing more than an obstacle or impediment to the pursuit of their own pleasures, ambitions, and self-actualizations — they become docile, easily manipulated, and, in terms of the cosmic battle for souls, place themselves on the brink of damnation.
