Fortunately for us, for humankind altogether, God — who is that external source — has seen fit to reveal himself in history, to form a relationship, a covenant, with us, so that we can know, for one thing, what this morality is, though it is true that the conscience with which we have been imbued is another way of knowing it, to the extent that our conscience does not limit itself to the merely ‘humane’, but is capable of touching the providential, or divine.
