In other words, perhaps Americans, on the whole, are more insulated or inward-looking than your average global citizen, but not without reason. And besides, it’s inane to make anything much of the tendency that I described (that tendency to glom onto received or stereotypical notions about someone’s country of origin), when a person, in engaging in that tendency, is very often only being friendly, and trying to make conversation, by showing interest or curiosity about where that someone is from.
