“The letter killeth but the spirit giveth life,” Saint Paul wrote, in his second letter to the Corinthians. Which saying is of course reminiscent of Jesus, who judged humankind based on what he saw in their hearts, more than on how poorly or how expertly they were able to adhere to, say, the ‘letter’ of the Mosaic Law.
