I wouldn’t presume to know exactly why or how this style developed (I’m sure there are reasons both cultural and historical), but I do think that part of the reason is that Scripture tends to classify its characters not according to psychological and emotional wellness or unwellness, but according to fidelity or infidelity, faithfulness or lack of faith.
